その一言一言が大きな影響力を持つワイン評論家として知られる、アメリカ在住のマイケル・フランツ氏が、2007年のワールド・ワイン・プロデューサー・オブ・ザ・イヤーにニュージーランドを代表するワイナリーであるヴィラ・マリア・エステートを選出したことが話題になっている。

これはフランツ氏が編集者、コラムニスト兼サイト運営者として携わっているワイン・レビュー・オンライン上で発表されたもの。その中で同氏はヴィラ・マリア・エステートを「技術面での革新者であり、質と価格の好バランスの模範者」と称した上で、「リザーヴ・クリフォード・ベイ・ソーヴィニヨン・ブラン」と「シングル・ヴィンヤード・テイラーズ・パス・ソーヴィニヨン・ブラン」が世界一に値するワインであると特筆している。

また称賛はワイナリーやワインだけに留まらず、スクリューキャップ革命を起こした中心人物と言われるヴィラ・マリアのオーナー、ジョージ・フィストニッチ氏個人にまで及んだ。
それを受けたフィストニッチ氏は次のように喜びを語っている。
「いち早く全てのワインにスクリューキャップを採用するということは、ヴィラ・マリアにとって大きな決断であり、その利点を消費者に理解してもらうまでには多大な時間と努力を要した。ニュージーランド・ワインにとって重要な市場であるアメリカでは特に現在もコルク栓が好まれる傾向にあるので、今回フランツ氏のようなワイン界に影響力を持つ方のサポートを得られたことは大きな後押しになり喜ばしいこと」

またヴィラ・マリアは、ワイン・レビュー・オンライン同様アメリカで人気を博しているワイン雑誌「ワイン・エンシュージアスト（ワイン・ファンの意）」でも2007年度ニューワールド・オブ・ザ・イヤーの座を見事獲得しており、同ワイナリーだけではなく、ニュージーランド・ワイン業界全体の知名度アップと名声を得ることにも大きく貢献している。

ニュージーランドにおける受賞歴最多ワイナリーとして知られるヴィラ・マリアは2007年も大成功を収めた。以下昨年受賞した主要な賞の一覧。
